Nemea, Greece. Biennial games of Zeus with a crown of wild celery

Overview

The Nemean Games were held every two years at the sanctuary of Zeus at Nemea in the northeastern Peloponnese, joining the Panhellenic circuit in the 6th century BC. Athletes competed in footraces, combat sports and equestrian events for a crown of wild celery. The excavated stadium, entered through a vaulted tunnel, has hosted revived Nemean Games for modern runners since 1996.
