Neutral Switzerland stepped up with facilities intact, hosting 28 nations three years after the war ended. Skeleton returned for its second appearance, then vanished again until 2002. Dick Button, aged 18, landed the first double axel in Olympic competition to win figure skating, and French skier Henri Oreiller took two alpine golds.
