Stockholm 1956 Equestrian Games
Stockholm, Sweden. The equestrian half of Melbourne, held five months earlier
Overview
Australian quarantine law barred imported horses, so all equestrian events moved to Stockholm in June 1956, five months before Melbourne opened, the only time a single Games split its sports across continents and seasons. Riders from 29 nations competed, and Henri Saint Cyr of Sweden defended both dressage titles from Helsinki. Stockholm staged its own opening ceremony and torch relay, and the IOC lists it as a separate edition.
