Overview
Japan showcased its postwar rebirth: the Shinkansen bullet train opened days before the Games, and events reached overseas audiences via the Syncom 3 satellite. Judo and women volleyball made their debuts, the host women winning volleyball gold. Yoshinori Sakai, born in Hiroshima on the day of the 1945 atomic bombing, lit the cauldron.
