Overview
After the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, dozens of nations led by the United States stayed away; about 80 attended, several marching under the Olympic flag. Gymnast Alexander Dityatin earned medals in all eight events, a record for a single Games. Cuban boxer Teofilo Stevenson won a third straight heavyweight gold, and the hosts topped the medal table.
