Overview
Sapporo was chosen in 1936, the first Winter Games awarded to Asia. After the war in China widened, Japan relinquished the Games in 1938. St Moritz and then Garmisch Partenkirchen stood in on paper until world war erased the 1940 winter calendar entirely. Sapporo finally hosted in 1972.
