Overview
Pierre de Coubertin convened an international congress on amateur sport at the Sorbonne in June 1894. On 23 June the delegates voted to revive the Olympic Games, appointed Athens as the first host and formed the International Olympic Committee with Demetrius Vikelas as its first president. Olympic Day is still celebrated on 23 June.
