Overview
A record 201 delegations competed as the Games came home, with the shot put staged at ancient Olympia. Michael Phelps won six golds and eight medals, beginning his march to the all time records. Brazilian marathoner Vanderlei de Lima, tackled by a spectator in the closing miles, took bronze and received the Pierre de Coubertin medal for sportsmanship.
