Aboriginal Australian Cathy Freeman lit the cauldron at the opening, then won the 400 meters before 112,000 people at Stadium Australia ten days later. More than 10,000 athletes and 199 delegations took part, with North and South Korea parading under one flag. Triathlon and taekwondo debuted, and 17 year old Ian Thorpe won three swimming golds for the hosts.
