Calgary 1988 Winter Olympics
Calgary, Canada. Eddie the Eagle and the Jamaican bobsled charmed the world
Overview
Matti Nykanen of Finland won all three ski jumping golds and Yvonne van Gennip of the Netherlands three speed skating titles. British ski jumper Michael Edwards, known as Eddie the Eagle, finished last with unmistakable panache, and Jamaica entered a four man bobsled, inspiring the film Cool Runnings. The Games stretched to 16 days for the first time, a format that stuck.
