Liverpool Olympic Festivals
Liverpool, England. Amateur Olympic festivals of John Hulley and Charles Melly
Overview
Gymnastics instructor John Hulley and philanthropist Charles Melly staged a Grand Olympic Festival at the Mount Vernon parade ground in Liverpool in June 1862, open to gentlemen amateurs. Further festivals followed through the 1860s, and Hulley went on to help found the National Olympian Association in 1865. The Liverpool events show Olympic revival ideas spreading in Victorian England decades before 1896.
