Nordic Games
Stockholm, Sweden. The winter sports festival that preceded the Winter Olympics
Overview
Championed by Viktor Balck, a founding member of the IOC, the Nordic Games were staged mostly in Stockholm between 1901 and 1926, with skiing, skating, ice hockey and other winter events. Scandinavian leaders long resisted adding winter sports to the Olympics, seeing the Nordic Games as their own showcase, but the success of the 1924 winter sports week at Chamonix soon eclipsed them.
