Summer GamesPioneering Era 1896-19121900

Paris, France. First Games with women athletes, folded into the 1900 World Exposition

Overview

Stretched over five months from May to October, the Games ran alongside the Exposition Universelle, and many competitors never realized they had taken part in the Olympics. Women appeared for the first time, about 22 of them, with Briton Charlotte Cooper becoming the first female Olympic champion in tennis. Swimming was held in the murky Seine and track events ran on the grass of the Racing Club de France. France won the most medals while the United States took the most golds.
