Stockholm 1912 Summer Olympics
Stockholm, Sweden. Jim Thorpe won two titles as electronic timing debuted
Overview
Regarded as the best organized Games of the early era, Stockholm introduced automatic electric timing and a public address system. Jim Thorpe, a Native American, won both the pentathlon and decathlon by huge margins, only to be stripped of his titles in 1913 on dubious amateurism grounds; he was restored decades later and fully rehabilitated by the IOC in 2022. Women swam at the Olympics for the first time, and Japan took part for the first time.
