Summer GamesPioneering Era 1896-19121904

St Louis, USA. First Games in the Americas, remembered for a chaotic marathon

Overview

Attached to a World Fair like Paris 1900, the Games drew mostly American entrants, over 500 of about 650 athletes, and the medal table skewed heavily to the hosts. The marathon entered legend for the wrong reasons: Fred Lorz rode several miles in a car after cramping, while winner Thomas Hicks was fueled with brandy and strychnine by his handlers. Boxing, freestyle wrestling and the decathlon made their debuts on the program.
