Sarajevo 1984 Winter Olympics
Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. Balkan Winter Games, eight years before war engulfed the city
Overview
Marja Liisa Hamalainen of Finland won three cross country golds, and 18 year old Katarina Witt of East Germany won her first figure skating title, with 49 nations marching. Eight years later the siege of Sarajevo began, and the mountain venues above the city became front lines. The bobsled track later stood as a graffiti covered relic of the war.
