Some 159 nations gathered as the Eastern bloc returned and table tennis made its debut. Canadian Ben Johnson smashed the 100 meters in 9.79 seconds, then tested positive for stanozolol within days; the gold passed to Carl Lewis and the scandal helped drive the creation of WADA a decade later. Steffi Graf added Olympic tennis gold to her four grand slam titles, completing the first Golden Slam.
