Amsterdam, Netherlands. Women entered track and field as a flame burned for the first time

Overview

For the first time a flame burned in a tower throughout the Games, though the torch relay only began in 1936. Women competed in athletics for the first time; American Betty Robinson, aged 17, won the 100 meters, while several collapses after the 800 meters prompted that event to be dropped until 1960. India began a run of six straight field hockey gold medals, and Germany returned after its postwar exclusion.
