Overview

Held in a city still scarred by war, with Germany, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire excluded, the Games debuted the five ring flag designed by Coubertin and the Olympic oath, taken by fencer Victor Boin. Some 2,600 athletes from 29 nations competed. French tennis prodigy Suzanne Lenglen won two gold medals, and Paavo Nurmi of Finland collected the first three of his nine career golds.
