Overview
An official Olympic Village of wooden cabins housed athletes for the first time. The motto Citius, Altius, Fortius, meaning faster, higher, stronger, was adopted, 44 nations competed, and the first Winter Games opened at Chamonix the same January. Paavo Nurmi dominated middle and long distance running with five gold medals, while Johnny Weissmuller, later famous as Tarzan in the movies, won three swimming golds. The film Chariots of Fire later dramatized the exploits of Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell here.
