Alpine combined events appeared for the first time, but ski instructors were barred as professionals, prompting Austrian and Swiss boycotts of the new events. Great Britain upset Canada to win ice hockey gold with a squad of Canadian born players. The Games ran days before Germany hosted the summer edition in Berlin.
