Overview
The COVID 19 pandemic forced the first postponement in Olympic history; the Games opened in July 2021 still branded Tokyo 2020, with almost no spectators. Skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing and karate joined the program. Japan won a record 27 golds, Caeleb Dressel took five swimming titles, and Simone Biles withdrew from finals, sparking a global conversation on athlete mental health.
